My Photo

About the Title

  • The blog title comes from a quote by
noted cycling announcer Phil Liggett - "He's really having to dig deeply into the suitcase of courage."
I thought it would best capture not only my trials & tribulations in bike racing, but also what we all have to go to when dealing with illness.

About the Banner

  • The banner is the photo finish from
    my 3rd race ever - the Cat4/5 Northampton Criterium July 4, 2006.
Out of 75 starters, only 49 finished. Lots of crashes. They actually stopped the race in the middle to clear the emergency vehicles.
That's me - on the far right - hanging on for dear life (see homepage banner).
    But I finished! Came in 15th (4th among Cat5s).

Biography

Crohn’s Disease patient who started serious road riding in July 2005 as a way to aid recovery and get in shape. Did first century ride the next month, unsupported and “by accident.”

Had a paper route and rode my bike all over during school, High School & College. Then got into riding railtrails (I`m a railroad history buff). Got my first road/racing bike as a 10th anniversary present and got into racing to fulfill a long-time dream.

Started racing May 2006 and participating in the East Hartford Criterium Training Series.

Goals:
To highlight the health and social benefits of cycling, especially for those overcoming illness. Would also like to develop advanced racing skills and become more competitive.
