After another "recovery" day - which consisted of watching the steady rain and doing core exercises while The Missus "walked away the pounds" (no way am I ever going to do that again) - I was actually excited to get out for my next morning run.
Yeah, nobody is more surprised at that than I am. I just hoped the rain would quit by the morning. When I woke up - no rain, but it was around 30 degrees, or 25 (depending on whether you look at the phone or the iPad) and very, very foggy. A quick check of the porch railing told me the water droplets were just water. But that was a lie. When I got to the driveway I almost fell on my keister. It (the driveway) was slippery.
I probably should have turned around and gone back inside, but you know how it is with a new thing - you've got all that fresh enthusiasm. And, often, little sense. Inverse correlation. But I was already out and I figured the road had to be better.
It wasn't. If anything, it was worse.
My walking intervals actually felt slippery-er than the running, but the running... well, the running was just weird. I never really felt like I was going to slip, but I must've (over)compensated somehow. I was noticeably slower than on previous days (my cooldown ended before the Ashlawn Farm parking lot) and I knew I was taking shorter strides. By the time I got to the cafe, my right leg was especially sore.
But that didn't diminish the FREE COFFEE I got. Yes, I finally got my frequent drinker card fully punched. The freebie was a large, the fire was on, and the couch was comfy. But I only sat a couple minutes - I didn't want my legs to totally seize, and besides, I heard some noise outside.
After watching a few trains go by, I finished my coffee and headed home - doing a couple light 60 second jogs on the way to (try and) keep things loose.
I don't know how much it helped though - all the rest of the day I had a nagging pain. I'd pulled - or at least fatigued - a muscle. Thankfully, I have another R&R day before heading out for my final run of week 1. I just hope things heal up in time. It is WAY too early in this program to have to miss workouts. I think next time it's icy I'll try to find a treadmill instead.
